Daytime Running Lights (DRL) Compatibility
Some earlier manufacturer documentation refers to vehicles with Daytime Running Lights (DRL). This warning relates to specific Scandinavian market requirements, where trailer position lights are required to illuminate even when the vehicle is operating with daytime running lights.
Under the standard European operating configuration, when the BMW is driving with Daytime Running Lights only, the rear lights of the vehicle and the trailer remain switched off. Once ambient light levels decrease and the vehicle automatically changes to low beam headlights, the genuine Westfalia control module immediately activates the trailer lighting as intended.
This is normal vehicle operation and does not affect the safe or correct functioning of the towbar wiring kit for standard Australian or European road use.

Module in this kit is for vehicles without DRL function
Towbar, to work correctly, requires a module. This is responsible for CAN communication with other modules:
- Engine - when towing it works differently to cope with extra load - sometimes switches additional fan to cool
- ABS / ESP module - these work differently when trailer is hooked to avoid jack knifing.
- CECM - This power module distributes power in another way when trailer is hooked - also visually aids the driver when trailer is hooked on dashboard
- LED Trailer Module 69 - Operates Canbus Coomunication with all vehicle modules on powertrain can.
- OPS - This is coded so when trailer is hooked up sensors do not beep
- CAN gateway - trailer module is coded into the gateway (main comms hub) so the car and other modules know what to do
- RVC - reversing camera - similar thing to parking sensors - recognises the trailer on the screen switches off dynamic lines
- 5F Information Electronics - ensures entertainment system displays all the trailer info correctly.
